Montréal—A Touch of Europe in North
America
The City
Montréal is the largest bilingual city in
North America known for its distinct culture and international cuisine.
Recognized as the world's second-largest French-speaking metropolis
in North America—where English is also commonly spoken—it
is a city of international repute. Montréal is also a popular
tourism destination because of its beauty and nightlife.
Montréal, unlike many other metropolitan
cities, offers approximately 1000 parks for leisure or excursion
that are accessible throughout the city. The infamous Mount-Royal
Park, a Montréal landmark, is a creation of Frederic Olmsted,
an American landscape artist renowned for designing Central Park
in New York City. Mount-Royal Park’s two lookouts offer magnificent
views over the city. The park is easily reached via public transportation
or car and can be explored via an extensive network of bicycle and
walking paths.
Location
The city of Montréal is strategic entryway
to the rest of Canada and a short distance away to major cities
in the United States of America. The Greater Montréal area
is only one hour by air from New York, Boston and Toronto and only
two hours from Chicago.
Montréal is located at 45 degrees north
latitude and 74 degrees west longitude, on the same axis as New
York City and at the same latitude as Bordeaux, France. Ideally
located on the St. Lawrence River, the Greater Montréal area
has always been a key transportation hub between Europe and North
America.
The population of the Montréal area
is nearly 3.3 million people.
